1. Marking Depth

  • Typically, fiber lasers are used for surface marking (engraving or annealing) rather than deep engraving.


  • Depth range:

    • Surface marking (black/color marking): 0.01–0.1 mm (e.g., logos, serial numbers).

    • Light engraving: 0.1–0.5 mm (e.g., barcodes, QR codes).

    • Deep engraving (with multiple passes): Up to 1–2 mm (on metals like steel, aluminum).


Factors Affecting Marking Depth:

✔ Laser Power – Higher power (e.g., 50W, 100W) allows deeper marking.
✔ Material – Metals (stainless steel, aluminum) allow deeper marks than plastics.
✔ Speed – Slower speeds increase depth.
✔ Pulse Frequency – Lower frequencies (e.g., 20–50 kHz) create deeper marks.
✔ Lens Focus – Shorter focal lengths (e.g., 100mm) provide finer but shallower marks, while longer focal lengths (e.g., 200mm) allow deeper engraving.


2. Cutting Depth (Limited Capability)

Fiber lasers are primarily marking machines, not designed for cutting like fiber laser cutters. However, with high power and multiple passes, they can perform very thin cutting:


  • Max Cutting Depth (for reference only):

    • Up to 1–2 mm (stainless steel, carbon steel).

    • Up to 3–5 mm (aluminum, with difficulty).

    • Not suitable for thick metals – For cutting >1mm, a fiber laser cutter (500W–6kW) is recommended.


Best Practices for Deeper Marks/Cuts:

  • Use multiple passes (3–10 times).

  • Reduce marking speed (e.g., 100–300 mm/s).

  • Adjust focus lens for deeper penetration.

  • Higher power lasers (100W–200W) perform better.
