Under the strict environmental protection policy, laser rust removal is regarded as an excellent alternative to the traditional rust removal process, and is valued by various industries. Laser rust removal uses the interaction between laser and rust, and light energy is converted into thermal energy. Instantly, rust is heated and gasified to achieve the purpose of rust removal, which is accompanied by thermal stress expansion and vibration. Laser rust removal process is accompanied by cauterization effect and vibration effect.

From a microscopic point of view, we analyze how the cauterization effect and vibration effect occur, so as to have a deeper understanding of the principle of laser rust removal and facilitate its use in practical production.

Cauterization effect.

When the laser irradiates the rust layer, the laser interacts with the rust layer, the rust layer absorbs laser energy, and the light energy is converted into heat energy, and the temperature of the rust layer rises rapidly. When the laser energy density is high enough, the temperature of the rust layer will exceed its melting point and boiling point. Combustion, decomposition, gasification and stripping from the metal surface occur.

After the high-energy laser beam is focused, the temperature of the focus position can reach thousands of degrees Celsius. The cauterization effect is to use the high-energy laser to act on the rust layer to produce a thermal effect to destroy the structure of the rust layer and eliminate the adhesion force.

As shown in the image above, when the laser energy reaches the surface of the rust layer, the rust layer absorbs the laser energy to convert it into thermal energy, and when the temperature exceeds the vaporization temperature, it becomes plasma (a highly ionized unstable gas), just like burning pig hair on a pig's head. be cauterized and peeled off.

Simply put, the cauterization effect is the process by which rust is gasified by the conversion of light energy into thermal energy.

Vibration effect.

Under the laser irradiation, the energy received by the rust layer begins to heat up, and the volume of the rust layer expands after heating, resulting in upward elastic force, which makes the rust layer peel off.

Continuous transmission of laser, continue to produce upward elastic force, will form a vibration effect.

The vibration effect is the main force to overcome the adhesion.

How does this process happen from a micro point of view?

A specific laser works on a specific wavelength, and the laser wavelength that is most easily absorbed by rust molecules is 1064nm.

This is because the laser of a particular wavelength has a specific vibration frequency, and the rust molecules also have a specific vibration frequency, which will produce "resonance" when they have the same vibration frequency, and the friction between the molecules will generate heat. in a very short period of time, rust molecules reach extremely high temperatures and are vaporized.

Because the metal substrate has a low acceptance rate of this wavelength of laser, it will not react with the laser.

Whether it is cauterization effect or vibration effect, its basis is energy transformation, light energy is converted into thermal energy, and thermal energy produces thermal stress expansion and vibration, which complement each other. Without cauterization effect, there will be no vibration effect. Without molecular vibration in the microscopic field, there will be no temperature rise.

Laser rust removal is the result of cauterization effect and vibration effect.
